4. Race (number): 2
5. Time (in Replay): 21:26
6. Rule(s) applicable: RRS 16.1 + MLS Rule 3.5.1.e
7. Boat(s) involved: Clande
8. Description:
The cancellation:
Clande broaches and as a result he is luffing me to a broach. I had no opportunity to pass to leeward of him, because when he broached his boat luffed hard, and my boat instantly went from being clear astern to being overlapped to windward. Since I was luffed to a broach, I was not given room to keep clear in a seamanlike way, which is a violation of rule 16.1. In the end the boats hit, and there was not much I could do other than trying to regain control of the boat and sails.
Request for redress:
MLS Rule 3.5.1.e makes me entitled to redress because I was luffed to a broach.
There was no fault of my own, as I actually hoisted sail 3 with plenty of safety margin. I pushed sail 3 button when I had completed my tack to port around the mark, which is about 4 seconds delayed. I also made sure to be clear astern of Clande, in case he decided to sail high.
I rounded the mark 10 seconds ahead of Saf when 80% of the race was done, which justifies a redress with points equal to the position Saf finally will get in the race after all protests are processed. This gives Saf and the other boats that were behind me 1 point better than they most likely would have scored without the broach, and I get what I most likely would have scored, which is a fair redress.
